Colonia - A Treasure for Humanity

Back in 1995, Colonia del Sacramento was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for good reason. This port community along the Rio de la Plata is stocked full with history and charm and is characterized by colorful houses and windy streets. Colonia was founded by the Portuguese in 1680. It changed hands between the Spanish and Portuguese numerous times until the late 18th century, when a treaty was signed establishing Colonia as a Spanish city. As a result, there are strong Portuguese and Spanish influences and contributions to the old quarter of town. One example can be found on the cobblestoned streets. If the water drainage is oriented towards the center of the street, it means that it was developed by the Portuguese. If the runoff however is found along the sides of the street, it reflects that the street was created by the Spaniards.

We have seen a number of interesting sites around Colonia over the past couple days. We visited the old fortress and drawbridge (originally built in 1745) and also the Plaza de Toros, which served as a bullfighting ring between 1910-12. We visited an elementary school which was a neat experience. The kindergarteners sang a song in English for us and that was a treat!

We also made a stop on our way into Colonia at a place that can be characterized as unique. It is called the Granja Colonia and is essentially a museum of a 61 year old man´s life collections. The collections include pencils, ashtrays, cola cans, and his largest - a collection of over 25,000 key chains. In fact, the museum proudly boasts to having the Guiness Book Record for the most key chains in the world. If you happen to have a spare key chain, he is still collecting them! Unfortunately, I was unable to make a contribution this time around as my key chain is back home in Houston.

Colonia is the last stop for me on this journey and I can´t imagine a nicer place to conclude this Fulbright tour, which has been memorable in every way. Later today, I will return to Montevideo and head back north to the summer and the states. I will post one more entry upon my return, but for now...ciao ciao!
